Indian team of the ‘90s evokes nostalgia. An entire generation that started following the game back then has grown up watching most of those players serve the nation for long. A rare picture from that era recently resurfaced on social media. The picture, taken in October-November 1996, features Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Sunil Joshi, Venkatesh Prasad and Vikram Rathour along with some guests.
After getting knocked-out in the semi-final of the World Cup 1996, the next big home One-Day International (ODI) series India played was the Titan Cup. The triangular tournament, which featured South Africa and Australia as the other two teams, was the first assignment of then 22-year old Sachin Tendulkar as captain. The picture was taken during the same tournament, which India won.
Under a young captain in Tendulkar, the Indian team in the late ’90s saw a lot of youngsters getting their chances and was a fine blend of experience and youth. The team for Titan Cup included uncapped players like Sujith Somasunder, Robin Singh and Pankaj Dharmani where as others like Ganguly, Dravid and Rathour were still in the first year of their international cricket. The picture exemplifies the same, as it has both experienced and young players in it.
