Jason Holder has one of the toughest jobs. At a young age, he has been entrusted with preserving the West Indian legacy that has only gone downhill since the turn of the century. When India arrived on the Caribbean shores last month, they were expected to thrash the hosts 4-0. The first Test went India’s way and the second at Kingston too was dominated by India until four days. When it seemed that the Indian victory was only a session away, the hosts put up a brave show and managed to save the match.
West Indian cricket has been plagued with money problems and politics with the likes of Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine, etc. playing in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) instead of the ongoing Tests. The young cricketers, this time rose to the occasion and made it count. West Indies resumed play on Day Five at 48 for 4, facing a herculean task of preventing an innings defeat. Overnight batsman Jermaine Blackwood struck a 53-ball 64, while Roston Chase brought up his maiden Test hundred and remained unbeaten on 137. Chase weaved a 144-runs sixth wicket stand with wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich, who chipped in with a fine 74. Captain Holder too came to the party with an unbeaten 64.
West Indies saved the Test with their gritty display and for the first time in the series, they showed a fight.
Holder was happy with the way his side showed “character” and congratulated Chase with an Instagram post. He also called this day, “one of his best” in Test cricket.
