Wriddhiman Saha’s explosive 203 not out in the Irani Cup 2016-17 guided Rest of India (ROI) to a famous win against the Parthiv Patel-led Gujarat. Parthiv replaced an injured Saha for the last three Tests against England, and delivered inspiring performances with the bat. He also exhibited a much-improved show behind the stumps. In short, the Gujarat skipper scripted a fairytale comeback to the Test side after being out for more than eight years. Strengthening his case, he led the Gujarat side to their maiden Ranji Trophy triumph. He slammed 90 in the first innings and sealed the game with a thumping 143 in the second. He also claimed six catches. ALSO READ: Saha seals ‘keeper-slot debate’ with Parthiv; makes strong case for batting promotion

The Irani Cup 2016-17 was touted as a Parthiv vs Saha contest. Saha fell for a duck in the first innings while Parthiv received a horrendous decision in the second. Gujarat, who had dominated the major part of the game, set 379 for ROI and had them reeling at 63 for 4 when Saha walked out.

A positive approach by Saha kept ROI in the hunt. Saha (203*) and skipper Cheteshwar Pujara (116*) stitched an unbeaten 316-run stand to help ROI win the game. At the same time, Saha has now strengthened his case as the India’s first choice wicketkeeper in Tests.
