Polly Umrigar never had a particularly good time against Fred Trueman on India’s 1952 tour of England. When India visited England seven years later, they were scheduled to play a tour match against Yorkshire, of which Trueman was a part.

Dickie Bird, who was 12th man, in that game has an interesting tale narrate. Apparently, Umrigar pulled out of the contest on the morning of the match with a back pain. However, when it was announced that Trueman had also injured, Umrigar announced that he was available for the match. But some excellent work by the physiotherapist ensured Trueman was fit for the match. The moment he heard that Trueman was fit, Umrigar “suffered” another back pain and ruled himself out of the contest!
