Australian all-rounder Shane Watson and West Indian batsman Chris Gayle have shared on-field bitterness for long now. But what international cricket couldn’t do, Indian Premier League (IPL) has done. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have ended their ‘rivalry’ and turned them into mates, as these players will now appear for the franchise after it bought Watson for a whopping INR 9.5 crores during the recently concluded auction. The origin of dispute between Watson and Gayle goes back to 2009, when during a Test at Perth, Gayle labelled Watson as ‘soft’. This came after the latter’s celebration after dismissing Gayle, an act that earned Watson a reprimand from the ICC match referee.
There was a verbal volley between the two during the 2012 World T20 in Sri Lanka as well and the latest account of their rivalry could be noticed when Watson commented on Gayle’s controversial interview during the recently concluded Big Bash League (BBL), saying that the Jamaican’s behaviour – which saw him hit with a $10,000 fine – was hardly a surprise. IPL has mended bridges between many foes, most notably Harbhajan Singh with Andrew Symonds and Ricky Ponting, and more recently Gautam Gambhir and Simon Katich. This time RCB seem to have brought Gayle and Watson on the same page. Gayle recently posted an image of the two players together from his official Twitter account with the accompanying caption that read: “Who would’ve thought this would happen? want to punch him in the belly when taking this, but #RCB need him for #IPL”
