Cricket Australia in it’s website says, “In the space of just six months, Victorian Travis Dean has gone from an apprentice greenskeeper at his local golf club to breaking First-Class cricket records for his state. In May, Dean was almost halfway through his final year as an apprentice at Werribee Park Golf Club in Melbourne’s western suburbs before Cricket Victoria offered him his first professional cricket contract.”
Now that’s an incredible story, the 23-year old Dean filled in for Aaron Finch in the Victoria squad and went on to enter the history books. He became the seventh man in history and the second Australian to score hundreds in each innings of his First-Class debut and it was the first time ever in Sheffield Shield. The Australian to do it prior to him was the legendary Arthur Morris.
The youngster from Queensland, who still lives with his parents and older brothers, scored 154 not out in his maiden innings and followed that up with an 109 not out in a 229-run chase against Queensland on Friday. It was just a couple of days back when he was playing for Victoria Under 19 and smacked a 217 not out and 63 against Western Australia Under 19 at Perth.
Only a Test old, Dean is already being talked as the next Australian Test opener. While that’s too early to say that but the fact remains that Australia are in lookout for a steady opening batsman to fill the absence of Chris Rogers. He has definitely got people speaking and many took to Twitter to hail the young prodigy.
I would have to agree @TomMoodyCricket great start to his career well done. https://t.co/tyHha8Y1hJ
