West Indies becomes first team to win two World T20 title and 13 other ‘firsts’ in ICC World T20 2016

With the end of ICC World T20 2016, let’s look at some of the remarkable incidents that happened for the first time in the history of this T20 extravaganza. The tournament was exceptional, with full of spectacular action and records being broken. Arguably, it was the best World T20 tournament so far and it would be etched in our memory for the promising performances put up by the Associate nations, followed by some highly competitive matches. Abhishek Kumar picks out some of the notable firsts from this mega event:

1.  For the first time, the record of highest partnership of the tournament belongs to a pair from an Associate team. Partnership of 98 runs between Mohammad Nabi and Samiullah Shenwari of Afghanistan team is the highest partnership of this tournament that came against Zimbabwe.

2.  Like the partnership, it was the first instance when a bowler from an Associate nation ended up as the highest wicket-taker. Nabi took 12 wickets in seven matches. In the previous edition of the tournament, Ahsan Malik from Netherlands took 12 wickets and was the joint highest wicket-taker with Imran Tahir of South Africa. Hence, this makes Nabi the only bowler from an Associate team to end up as the highest wicket-taker in a World T20.

3.  England chasing down the mammoth total of 230 against South Africa is the highest chase by any team in World T20.

4.  This was the first instance when two ‘former’ champions—England and West Indies—locked horns in the final of a World T20.

5.  Tamim Iqbal from Bangladesh ends up being the highest run getter of the tournament with 295 runs in six matches at 73.75. This was the first time when a Bangladeshi batsman scored the most runs in a World T20.

6.  Tamim also scored an unbeaten 103 in this tournament against Oman. He became the first Bangladeshi batsman to make a hundred in a World T20 and is also the highest individual score of World T20 2016. Moreover, this was the first time a Bangladeshi batsman had the highest individual score to his name.

7.  Afghanistan’s qualification to the Super-10 stage of the tournament is the first instance in the history of World T20.

8.  Afghanistan’s victory against West Indies is the first win by an Associate team against the Caribbean side in the history of World T20. This was also Afghanistan’s first win against a full-member side in a World T20.

9.  Oman made their first appearance in a World Cup tournament across the formats and registered their first win in a World T20 by beating Ireland.

10.  Marlon Samuels is the first cricketer to get Man of match (MOM) awards twice in World T20 finals. Before 2016, he was the recipient of MOM award in 2012.

11.  This is the first time in the history of any ICC tournament when both men and women’s side of the same cricket board won a World Cup tournament on the same day. West Indies women and men were the winners of ICC World T20 2016.

12.  Virat Kohli is the first cricketer to receive Man of the tournaments (MOT) award twice in the history of any ICC event. Before 2016, he was awarded MOT in 2016.

13.  West Indies became the first team to win the ICC World T20 twice in the history of cricket.

14.  Samuels is the only cricketer to score a half-century in two World T20 finals that came in a winning cause. Kumar Sangakkara also has two fifties in two World T20 finals; while one came in a winning cause (2014), the other in a losing one (2012).
