Darren Sammy may be the ICC World T20 winning captain, twice but he has not found himself an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract this season. An entertainer that he is, the West Indian is now enthralling the presenters and commentators from the commentary box.
During Mumbai Indians’ (MI) match with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Sammy made an interesting revelation about his West Indian teammate Kieron Pollard and reckoned that the latter might not be very happy with him. Most cricketers are superstitious, Pollard being no different. The big all-rounder from Trinidad and Tobago believes that whenever he gives pre-match interviews, he fails to deliver in those games. So as a part of the preparation, he does not talk to presenters before the match. But ahead of the game at Visakhapatnam, Sammy requested him for an interview and Pollard obliged to his national T20 captain. In normal circumstances, he would not have spoken. The superstition that the big Trinidadian fears came back to haunt him. He had a poor outing with the ball, giving away 23 runs from his two overs and only scored 11 from 13 balls. When he got out, Mumbai Indians slipped to 48 for six, on their way to a humiliating defeat.
Just before Pollard got out, Sammy was boasting about his abilities and the lavish nicknames he has back home. Fellow commentators poked fun at him reminding him of how commentator’s curse claimed Pollard’s wicket. “Pollard won’t be happy with me,” quipped Pollard.
