“Water is more important for us than cricket. So, even if the cricket matches are shifted out of Maharashtra, I don’t mind.” That is what Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told reporters on Friday. There is a debate going on if the court should shift IPL 2016 out of the drought-hit state of Maharashtra.
Earlier this week, Justice VM Kanade said, “You can’t waste water like this. There is more need for water than for your matches. How can you waste water like this? Do you know what the condition is? In Marathwada, people get water only after 4-5 days.”
Pune, Mumbai and Nagpur are holding 20 matches and the water wastage estimated is around 6 million litres. A Twitter user used simple calculations to explain the actual wastage.
Although the water wastage figure of 6 million liters is not verified and might be largely inflated, one twitter user has explained the whole debate using simple mathematics and it makes a lot of sense.
Here’s what V Vinay tweeted on Friday:
0. The number of 6 million litres of water has been making the rounds for the IPL matches scheduled in Maharastra.

1. How large is this number? To find this out, let us look at the annual consumption of water by an individual. — V Vinay (@ainvvy) April 8, 2016
2. The average consumption of water by per person is ~150 Litres per day. Higher in urban, lower in rural than that. Let us take it as 100 L

3. It is about 36500 L for a year. If we take 175 persons, that amount in excess of 6 million Litres! — V Vinay (@ainvvy) April 8, 2016
4. So the consumption is that of 175 persons in Maharastra. Maharastra has a population of about 11 Crores.

5. And I am not even taking the water spent on agriculture/sugarcane/cattle etc. — V Vinay (@ainvvy) April 8, 2016
6. The number of 6million L is so small that is is seriously unfunny that there is a petitioner, and some high court judges debating this!
— V Vinay (@ainvvy) April 8, 2016
7. As a percentage of the water spent on people in MH, here is the number, 0.0001590909% This causes an uproar? And stopping IPL will help? — V Vinay (@ainvvy) April 8, 2016
8. So where is the problem? We are largely innumerate. Activists/Judges/Politicians. And us.
— V Vinay (@ainvvy) April 8, 2016
10. There are causes worth fighting, worth outraging. At least let us think a bit before doing so. Let me stop here. — V Vinay (@ainvvy) April 8, 2016
At the moment, we do not know what will happen but IPL should only shift out of the state of Maharashtra if the larger problem is really addressed.
