British comedian John Oliver satirically slammed the “comically grotesque” world football orgainsation, FIFA, in his show. While Oliver maintained that the FIFA World Cup 2014 was an event he was eagerly awaiting, he also spoke at length about the shortcomings of the body that organised the event.
In his show Last Week Tonight, Oliver spoke about how FIFA as an organisation has been corrupt and controversy-ridden for years, while speaking about how the football governing body was in many ways a vehicle for certain individuals to prosper. He then went on to talk about the problems that would be faced by host country Brazil due to the vast expenditure and unlikely returns of holding such a gala event. He ended by saying that even though FIFA itself is such an unworthy organisation, the love for the sport ensured that people would still flock to the World Cup in large numbers.
Oliver previously gained popularity due to his take on the grossly negligent coverage of the 2014 Indian Lok Sabha elections by the American media. He is noted for pointing out flaws in people and organisations through use of tongue-in-cheek humour and sharp satire, which he uses to good effect to both entertain and drive home a point.
