(Plagued with injuries and poor run recently, England will be anxious to get off to a winning start against New Zealand in their opening encounter at Chittagong. Catch Live Cricket Score of the match in our live blog below)
That’s it. The rain continues and the umpires have decided to call off play. So the two sixes by Brendin McCullum and a boundary by Kane Willaimson puts the Kiwis nine ahead of the D/L par score. Stuart Broad will be furious having lost tamely due to the weather. Corey Anderson has been adjudged Man of the Match for his 2 for 32 and two brilliant catches.
That’s not good news for the two matches of Group 2 scheduled tomorrow…
As per Yahoo weather report there is rain forecast tomorrow in Dhaka as well: pic.twitter.com/VYMMXG6glF
The rain is coming down heavily. The umpires had decide against walking off initially despite the lightning. But the rains have forced them to call the players back. New Zealand by virtue of the boundary on the first ball by Williamson are ahead of the D/L method.
Absolutely pouring down in Mirpur. Massive thunderstorm was predicted looks like it has arrived
The third ball of the over from Stuart Broad is clobbered by McCullum over midwicket for a six. On the next ball is driven ferociously by McCullum and the ball flies off the edge over slips for a boundary. Broad runs in to ball the fifth ball and McCullum backs off. There’s a thunder and lightning which distracted McCullum. With five overs completed, this match can be decided by Duckworth-Lewis method. To avoid any D/L issues, McCullum hammers the last ball for a six over the bowler’s head to go ahead of the rate. The lightening still going around.
Wicket for Jade Dernbach. Guptill goes for the pull and the top edge goes in the air on leg. Midwicket decides to go for the catch and Chris Jordan holds on to it. Earlier in the over, Guptill had hit one over covers for four. After the wicket, Dernbach delivers a back of hand slower ball to Williamson and catches the batsman off-guard. Brendon McCullum is the new batsman in.
OUT! Guptill 11(9)
After an over of spin from Moeen Ali, Tim Bresnan replaces him. The second ball of the over is hammered by Williamson past extra-cover for four. The next ball is short and wide, Williamson cuts it four. A couple on the next delivery playing towards midwicket.
Well, England’s jersey colour do compete the LED lights attached to the stumps…
A leg-bye and single on first two deliveries. Guptill then drives in the air past mid-on for four. Single again on the next ball. Good length maintained by Jade Dernbach overall.
Moeen Ali opens the bowling with his off-breaks. Only once has any team chased over 170 to win in a T20I in Bangladesh and that was the sensational chase by Netherlands last evening. Three singles in the first five deliveries. And on the last ball, Williamson makes room and hits past covers for four.
Good finish from England. Bopara gets couple each on next two deliveries. Bresnan then launches the fourth ball for a six from Anderson. 13 runs from it. England were looking for 170 and they have got what they targetted.
Mills had done well to keep his length full early on but in the latter half gives some length balls. The fifth one was smashed by Bresnan towards midwicket. Corey Anderson almost plucked off a blinder but the ball slips out of his hand and goes for a boundary. The next ball is slapped past covers for four.
Nathan McCullum bowls his last over. The first ball is played by Bopara towards midwicket and the batsmen sprint for two. After single on the next, Jordan heaves the fourth ball and finds Southee at long-on.Was too far back into his crease to hit that shot. England are batting deep, Bresnan walks in at No 8 with a strike-rate of 116. Just four runs from the over.
OUT! Jordan 8(6)
Tim Southee frustration continues. Ravi Bopara survives twice on the same ball! The second ball was rising from a good length and Bopara edges it but Luke Ronchi fails to collect that regulation catch. And Bopara assuming he would be caught was walking ahead. Ronchi notices and tries to pick the ball and throw at the stumps, misses again! And to add to the frustration, Bopara launches a length ball from Southee for six! On the last ball, Southee pitches it short and Jordan goes back to slap it over long-off for a six. Little momentum injected into England’s innings towards the end. 15 runs from the over.
Big wicket fro New Zealand. Corey Anderson bowls it fuller and slower, Buttler tries to drive but the ball dips, takes the bottom edge and crashes into the stumps, the led’s begin to blink and the Kiwis are celebrating. Anderson is focusing on change of pace here. CFhris Jordan is the new batsman in.
OUT! Buttler 32(23)
Teasing the bowler. Southee keeps it tight but Buttler shuffles across and scoops the second ball, the fielder in the deep sprints and dives to save it. Three runs. But on the fourth ball Buttler manages to scoop fine behind the keeper for four. On the last ball, Buttler plays wide of covers, Kyle Mills covers the ground and dives to stop it, but the ball trickles back to touch the fence. 12 from that over.
Jos Buttler’s S/r of 136.24* in T20Is is the 2nd highest for England after Kevin Pietersen’s 141,52 #EngvNZ#WT20
Clever bowling from Tim Southee. Focuses on change of pace as the wicket doesn’t have much to offer. The first ball didn’t bounce much, Morgan misses the pull shot and is hit above the thigh pad. The next ball is a slower off-cutter and Morgan is through with his shot. He is made to reach for the ball, chipped it towards mid-off and easy catch to Brendon McCullum. Ravi Bopara is the new batsman.
OUT! Morgan 12(15)
The first ball by McCullum is pitched up and Buttler drives it hard for a boundary. On the fourth ball, Brendon McCullum’s unorthodox field placing costs him a boundary. Buttler drives it with power to long-on and the fielder was straight behind the bowler’s arm, boundary again. England complete 100 in the 12th over.
The pitch has nothing to offer and England are well aware of it. They are going for the shots. Buttler slices the first ball by McClenaghan past point for a couple. Picks a single on the next ball. Morgan on the third one hits it in the air to the right of point for a boundary. Buttler plays the fifth ball aerially towards thirdman, the fielder was backing away and chooses not to go for the catch. Nine runs from that over. There is an unusual field setting, a man has been placed straight in the deep behind the bowler.
Tidy over from Nathan McCullum. The two quick wickets of set batsmen has put England into a cautious zone. Morgan cuts the ball in the deep and picks a couple on the third ball. He places the fourth one towards long-on and squeezes two more. Seven from that over.
Trouble. Wasted that excellent start. Need something special from Morgan now. Would think with due Eng need 170 to challenge
Gone, Lumb tries to cut the ball aerially past thirdman for a boundary. Unfortunately, he gets the timing right but not the distance, Anderson sprints in and takes a brilliant low catch diving forward. Jos Buttler is the new batsman.
OUT! Lumb 33(24)
Moeen Ali’s cameo comes to an end. Moeen goes for the pull again and was aiming for a six. Didn’t get the distance and hits straight to deep squareleg. Earlier, Anderson pitched the first ball a touch short and Lumb cuts it past point for a boundary.
OUT! Moeen 36(23)
Not seen Moeen Ali before. He’s playing a gem here and looks good. #wt20#EngvNZ
After powerplay, Nathan McCullum has been brought into bowl, but the run-scoring doesn’t stop. McCullum bowls a full toss angling down leg and Lumb guides it behind square for an easy boundary. On the next ball, McCullum again angles it in and Lumb makes room to drive it past extra-cover for a boundary. Excellent shot.
Good batting from Moeen. Fourth bowler in six overs, Corey Anderson comes in. Shuffles across and gets the scoop behind fine-leg for a boundary.
After an expensive over from Kyle Mills, Tim Southee has been brought into the attack. But Southee starts off poorly. The first one was a touch short and Moeen was quick to latch on to it and pulled it for a four. The next ball got a similar treatment and travelled much faster off the bat. Southee gets the length wrong on the fifth ball again and Lumb dispatches it for a six over midwicket. Lumb pierces the off-side on the last ball and picks a couple.
The first ball by McClenaghan is hit hard by Lumb in the deep on off-side for single. The second ball is just chipped in the air by Moeen for a single. The fourth ball is a slower one but Lumb goes through with his shot, almost went for a six but landed just inches inside the boundary.
First ball by Mills is worked away by Lumb for a single. The next ball, Moeen tries to swing but misses. The fourth one was a wide. On the next ball he slices it over mid-off, manages to clear the fielder and get a boundary. The next one was short and he pulled it for a six. He finishes off the over with a boundary past the bowler. 16 runs from it.
Moeen Ali starts off with a flick past mid-on for a boundary. Lovely timing. The fourth ball has gone down leg for three byes.
Alex Hales begins the tournament with a duck. Looks to play down the leg but the leading edge flies to mid-off and Corey Anderson takes a brilliant one handed catch running backwards. Good over by Kyle Mills, just one from it.
OUT! Hales 0(2)

England and New Zealand face off in their opening match of the ICC World T20 2014. I am Abhijit Banare and will be bringing the live updates to you. The Kiwis had a break from international assignments since the India series in January-February this year whereas England recently toured West Indies and had a dismal outing there. But the most concerning factor for England is the number of injuries. Skipper Stuart Broad is working hard o his knee to stay fit, they already lost Joe Root during the Caribbean tour and now key all-rounder Luke Wright too is out with an injury.
For the Kiwis, it looks like a settled unit and will be fresh after the break. Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor continue to be key players in the batting along with the hard-hitting Corey Anderson. In the bowling they have a miserly Nathan McCullum apart from the pace option of Mitchell McClenaghan and Kyle Mills.
New Zealand: Brendon McCullum (c), Kane Williamson, Martin Guptill, Ross Taylor, Corey Anderson, Anton Devcich, Colin Munro, Ronnie Hira, Nathan McCullum, Luke Ronchi (wk), Trent Boult, Mitchell McClenaghan, Tim Southee, Kyle Mills, Jimmy Neesham.
England: Stuart Broad (c), Michael Lumb, Alex Hales, Moeen Ali, Eoin Morgan, Ravi Bopara, Joss Buttler (wk), Craig Kieswetter, James Tredwell, Stephen Parry, Chris Jordan, Jade Dernbach, Tim Bresnan, Chris Woakes, Ian Bell.
