Teams:
Ireland: William Porterfield (C), Paul Stirling, Gary Wilson, Ed Joyce, Stuart Poynter (wk), Kevin O’Brien, Sean Terry, Andy McBrine, Barry McCarthy, Tim Murtagh, Peter Chase.
Afghanistan team: Asghar Stanikzai (C), Mohammad Shahzad (wk), Javed Ahmadi, Samiullah Shenwari, Rahmat Shah, Najibullah Zadran, Mirwais Ashraf, Dawlat Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Hamid Hassan, Rashid Arman.
Though the second ODI saw Afghanistan emerge as the winners, the lack of consistency in their middle-order was evident. It was a 66 from Mohammad Shahzad, who opened the batting and Najibullah Zadran’s 59 at No. 6 amidst a lot of twentyish scores that pushed Afghanistan’s total to a par score of 250 against Ireland. The Irish bowling looked impressive, with new in business Barry McCarthy and experienced Kevin O’Brien both bagging 4-fors.
However, Ireland failed to back the brilliant bowling performance up with the batting. Only Ed Joyce went past the 50-run mark and his 62 alongside Kevin’s 35 could not save their team from the defeat. The Afghan bowling remained highly effective with Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan maintaining their form. Dawlat Zadran looked exceptional with his line and length, while Mirwais Ashraf also did well.
