Former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has said that the timing to announce his retirement from Test cricket wasn’t right following the death of Australian Batsman Philip Hughes over four days back. “I suppose the current timing, what’s happened in the last few days, it doesn’t feel appropriate to make a big statement, so I thought that I’d just sit back and enjoy the Test win as much as I can,” he said. Vettori picked up two wickets in his sides innings defeat of Pakistan in Sharjah. Vettori did not play a Test for over two years following many injuries and went on to say that he did not feel it was right to retire from Tests after such a long interval.
At 18, Vettori became New Zealand’s youngest Test cricket when debuted against England in 1997 in Wellington, snaring Nasser Hussain for his first international wicket. Vettori has picked up 361 Test wickets in a career spanning over 17 years. Vettori also holds the record of having taken more Test wickets than any other left-arm spinner in history.
