Left arm-spinner Manishi claimed 5/58 as India Under-19 dismissed South Africa Under-19 for 152 before the Indian batsmen led by Yashasvi Jaiswal (81*) consolidated India’s position on day one of the 2nd four-day Youth Test at the Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.

After opting to bat first, Manishi rocked SA early, removing opener Thamsanqa Khumalo (13), skipper Matthew Montgomery (4). SA’s situation worsened with the run-out of Andile Mokgakane (7) before Manishi struck again with the wicket of Bonga Makhakha for seven. For 36/0, SA slumped to 68/4, losing their four wickets for just 32 runs.

Opener Ruan Terblanche then found support in Bryce Parsons as the duo got together for a stand of 53 runs for the fifth wicket. Terblanche was removed by off spinner Hrithik Shokeen for 51. That dismissal triggered another collapse as despite Parsons’ valiant 64 off 76 balls, SA went on to lose their next five wickets for 31 runs, with Parsons being the last man out.

While Manishi claimed five, Shokeen took 2/44. India fielders effected three run-outs.

In reply, India lost last match’s centurion Divyaaansh Saxena early for two to pacer Lifa Ntanzi before Jasiwal and Vathsal Govind put on 102 runs for the second wicket, before Govind fell for 25 to Mokgakane, signalling the end of the day with India at 112/2, trailing SA by 40 runs.

Brief Scores: India Under-19 112/2 (Yashsavi Jaiswal 81*; Andile Mokgakane 1/1) trail South Africa Under-19 152 (Bryce Parsons 64; Manishi 5/58) by 40 runs
