Victorian Bushrangers will not be having any experienced hands opening for them in their inaugural match of Sheffield Shield for the season as both Aaron Finch and Cameron White has not been picked up in the squad by the selectors. Victoria is supposed to open with raw uncapped talent Travis Dean in place of the experienced ones against Queensland at Melbourne Cricket Ground. “Cam is a bit unlucky but with our full compliment of players to choose from there just wasn’t a spot for him. If Finch had been selected it would have been as an opener and on this occasion Dean has been selected ahead of him,” Victoria’s chairman of selectors Andrew Lynch clarified about the choice. Dean scored 217 not out and 63 for Victoria against Western Australia in an under-23 game in Perth last week.
On the other hand, speedster James Pattinson has been named a place in the squad but his inclusion in the final XI seems a bit tricky looking at his back and hamstring injuries. While Glenn Maxwell, Peter Siddle and Fawad Ahmed have been included to the side, Left-arm spinner Jon Holland made an exit followed by his injury.
“Holland pulled up with a sore shoulder after the Matador Cup and is undergoing treatment, we expect him to be available in a couple of weeks. Fawad bowled a lot of overs in the Futures Leagues last week and improved as the match went on. As our Sheffield Shield Player of the Year last season, we look to him to have a similar influence this year.” said Victorian chairman of selectors Andrew Lynch.
Skipper Matthew Wade seemed confident after announcement of the squad as well as being able to make a come back after fighting for long with his fading wicket-keeping tactics. I feel a lot better. Two years ago I lost all confidence and probably all my technique through that period of Test cricket. That’s probably the worst I have ever kept, let alone for Victoria or in Test cricket or when I have come back. No doubt, that was the worst I have ever played. I feel really comfortable now. I am probably more confident in my technique than I was when I first got picked for Australia,” Wade said on Tuesday.
After the latest update, the squad is as follows-
Victoria Sheffield Shield squad: Matthew Wade (c), Fawad Ahmed, Scott Boland, Dan Christian, Travis Dean, Peter Handscomb, John Hastings, Glenn Maxwell, James Pattinson, Rob Quiney, Peter Siddle, Marcus Stoinis.
