Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) on Sunday announced Phil Simmons as team’s Head Coach. Simmons will take on the responsibilities from Dean Jones, who had been appointed as Afghanistan’s interim coach ahead of their Four-Day Match. Simmons was serving as team’s batting coach. ACB had a meeting regarding Afghanistan Cricket’s progress in 2017 on Sunday and revealed the decision there. Apart from Simmons, the coaching staff also consists of Manoj Prabhakar as bowling coach and Muhammad Ramzan as their fielding coach.

Jones had been closely observing Afghanistan’s game as he had commentated in the Spagheeza T20 tournament. While appointing Jones, the board had stressed upon having a long term contract with him. “(The) Afghanistan Cricket Board has appointed Dean Jones, a prominent former Australian cricketer and commentator, as its head coach for the four-day Intercontinental games in Hong Kong. Both parties will consider a long-term agreement after the games,” a statement released by the board read.

However, Jones’ stint lasted from October 2017 to December 2017 only. Before Jones, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Lalchand Rajput have worked with the Afghanistan team and are said to be the change-makers for the side. Under these two coaches, Afghanistan grew massively, and later earned the Test status with their impressive performance.

With Afghanistan’s maiden Test soon to take place, a lot of responsibilities will lie on Simmons’ shoulders as he takes up his post. Simmons has earlier coached teams such as Zimbabwe, Ireland and West Indies.
