Going by the tradition, a former Australian player who retired not more than five years ago gets to lead the PM’s XI.

According to Sydney Morning Herald, Gilchrist, Brett Lee, Justin Langer, Matthew Hayden and Simon Katich are all in contention for the job as Cricket Australia seeks to get a good a crowd for the game to be played on January 14.

Gilchrist, who retired in 2008 after the home series against India, holds the record of smashing the second fastest century in Test cricket when he achieved the feat in just 57 deliveries in the 2006-07 Ashes Test at Perth.
