Aditya Tare has captained Mumbai to their 45th Ranji Trophy final. The 2015-16 final was Tare’s first season as skipper, and not only has the team flourished under him, but his own game has improved tremendously. Players of the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Akhil Herwadkar and Shreyas Iyer have improved tremendously under his watch. As a result Mumbai have reached the final of India’s premier domestic competition for the first time in three years which is a significant gap for the 40-time champions. Their ascent from semi-final to final also had largely to do with Tare’s spectacular century in the first innings. ALSO READ: Shreyas Iyer on the verge of Ranji Trophy history
“Well, we are obviously excited at the prospect of playing the finals. This is a young enthusiastic bunch who have come up with stellar contributions at crucial junctures of the seasons. This is the reason why we have managed to reach the finals,” Tare explained in an interview with Indian Express.
He gave credit to coach Chandrakant Pandit for Mumbai’s journey to the final. Chandu sir’s (coach Chandrakant Pandit) inputs also helped us, and the fact that we had a comprehensive pre-season camp helped us to gel together as a team. It was a young team no doubt, but we also had someone like Abhishek Nayar who has been a veteran on the domestic circuit. He has been the mentor to the youngsters,” Tare said.
Having reached the final, Tare knows his biggest challenge is now since Saurashtra have been in stellar form. “They have some talented batsmen and bowlers in their ranks, who can individually win them the match,” said Tare.
Tare finds his triple role in the team quite an enjoyable challenge. “I am actually enjoying the captaincy. Infact after having been elevated to the role of a captain, I have become more consistent in my batting and my keeping. I think, captaincy has brought out the best in me. On a personal level, this has been a very fruitful Ranji season for me,” Tare said.
