Ireland set 166-run target for Afghanistan in the first of the three-T20I series at Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground, the latter’s adopted home turf. Riding on the back of stunning batsmanship by Stuart Thompson and handy knocks from William Porterfield and Gary Wilson, Ireland will look to continue their stellar show when they come out to bowl. However, they did not have start they had planned to. After opting to bat, Ireland opener Paul Stirling could not open his account. Thus, the onus was then on Porterfield and Thompson to provide impetus and keep their team on course. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: Afghanistan vs Ireland, 1st T20I at Greater NOIDA

The duo put up an 82-run stand for the second wicket off 54 balls, with Thompson dropping the anchor and going great guns. He attacked Mohammad Nabi and Karim Janat in particular before throwing his wicket to Amir Hamza.

Rashid Khan, who is set to debut in IPL 2017 for Sunrisers Hyderabad, brought his side back in the contest. He got rid of Porterfield, inducing a run-out. He then dismissed the big gun Kevin O’Brien to put the Irishmen to further trouble. Rashid finished his quota, leaking only 24 runs. However, Wilson and Lorcan Tucker did not let the momentum shift away. They targetted Shapoor Zadran and Nabi in the death overs. Asghar Stanikzai, by all means, could have used his spinners a little better and not left Nabi bowl in the last over. Ireland left no stone unturned to make full use of whatever was offered to them.

Ireland will be a happy camp going in to the break with a challenging score on the board. Afghanistan, on the other hand, will look to Mohammad Shahzad to provide a brilliant start and the likes of Nabi and Stanikzai to finish off the task.

Brief scores:

Ireland 165 for 5 in 20 overs (Stuart Thompson 56, William Porterfield 39, Gary Wilson 41*; Amir Hamza 2 for 23, Rashid Khan 1 for 24) vs Afghanistan
