The Afghanistan team that has been on the rise by qualifying for ICC World Cup 2015 and giving Test playing nations a run for their money were awarded with Laureus Spirit of Sport Award.  The Afghanistan setup also recently beat Bangladesh in Asia Cup 2014.

Afghanistan cricket received the honour in a ceremony in Malaysia. Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) CEO, Noor Mohammad Murad said, “We are very proud to receive Spirit of Sport Award. It recognises the hard work of players, officials and administrators over the past 12 years in building cricket in our country,” he said as reported by Khaama Press.

He continued, “Cricket is more than a game in Afghanistan. It is a tool which is making an impact in the development of peace, unity and development. I am sure this award will motivate us in continuing to build cricket and its impact in our country.”

“We are proud of our national team who deserve this recognition. We are working hard with them to continue developing better performance and skills in preparation for the ICC World Cup 2015.”

Noor Mohammad though, concluded by saying that they have to be cautious, as they have a long way to go, “We still have a long way to go, but we have naturally talented players who are eager to learn. We are confident that with work, time and experience we can become a competitive team alongside the top cricketing countries of the world.”
