Young opener Ahmed Shahzad has turned out to be smarter in money matters than his seniors as he has received the full payment from his franchise in the Bangladesh Premier League.
At a time when the Federation for International Cricketers Association (FICA) has announced that it would initiate legal action against Bangladesh Cricket Board and its franchises for not paying dues of the players who took part in the BPL, Shahzad managed to collect his earnings in one go.
According to a source close to Shahzad, the opener, who appeared for Burisal Burners in the BPL and was in outstanding form for them, managed to collect his full amount from his franchise owners one day before the semifinal.
“Shahzad like other players was also frustrated by the delay in payments and he called up his franchise owner on the night before the semi final and made it clear he couldn’t play in the match unless his dues were cleared in one go,” the source said.
He said with Burisal Burners in the knockout stage and Shahzad one of the key players for the team, the franchise owners arranged for his full payment before the match.
“He not only collected his bid fees which was around USD 75,000 but also bonus payments such as USD 10,000 dollars for scoring a century and USD 5000 for each half century he scored in the tournament,” the source said.
Apart from Shahzad, flamboyant all-rounder Shahid Afridi is the other Pakistani player to have got his full payments from his franchise owners but few days after the BPL ended.
Fawad Alam, who played for a franchise in the BPL, confirmed he was still awaiting the clearance of his full dues like many other players including Mohammad Sami, Nasir Jamshed, Shahzaib Hasan, Abdul Razzaq and others.
“We have got around 50 percent of the total amount due to us from our franchise,” he said.
Shahzad, interestingly, won his place back in the Pakistan team on the basis of his outstanding form in the BPL. (PTI)
