Pakistan were 169 for two at tea on the third day of the third and final Test against Sri Lanka in Sharjah on Saturday.
Pakistan, trailing 1-0 in the series, lost opener Khurram Manzoor (52) and Azhar Ali (eight) in the second session after being 85 for no loss at lunch.
At the break Ahmed Shehzad was unbeaten on 94 and Younis Khan on eight as Pakistan still need another 59 runs to avoid the follow-on.
Sri Lanka had declared their first innings at 428 for nine on the second day.
Sri Lanka won the second Test in Dubai by nine wickets while the first Test ended in a draw in Abu Dhabi.
