The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is certainly not amused with International Cricket Council (ICC) Chief Executive David Richardson’s statement to the media, about the board making a ‘verbal request to the ICC’ in regards to the Lodha Committee reforms. “First of all, any verbal discussion is not a request. Informal discussions take place on so many issues. If BCCI gets into the various discussions that take place in the corridors of the ICC, I think it will not be a good thing for the sport as a whole,” BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke said as quoted by TOI. Shirke’s response came after Richardson specifically said “A verbal request was made by Mr (Anurag) Thakur to the ICC chairman (Shashank Manohar). However, the chairman was of the opinion that until and unless there’s a formal request made by the BCCI, it can’t be taken up by the ICC Board.” READ: BCCI invites applications for National Selectors

Shirke also said that, when the BCCI submitted affidavits in the Supreme Court, after the Lodha Committee recommendations, those affidavits included aspects about ICC’s intervention, should there be government intervention, while also adding that Manohar was aware of it all the time.

“When these affidavits were made, it was Shashank who approved them as BCCI president and lawyer. He was the one who said, ‘we should include this point’. He was already heading the ICC and was holding both portfolios at that time. Now, either he has conveniently forgotten about this or this Richardson has been tutored to say what he’s saying,” Shirke said.
