Alastair Cook on Monday became the first England batsman to score 10,000 Test runs when he went past five runs against Sri Lanka on the fourth day of the second Test at Durham. Cook became just the 12th batsman in the history of Test to achieve this feat. With this Cook also broke former India Test batsmen Sachin Tendulkar’s record being the youngest to reach this. Tendulkar reached his 10,00th run aged 31 years and 326 days while Cook achieved it aged 31 years and 157 days. Cook was also the first English cricketer to get past 9,000 runs in Test cricket, crossing the then leading run scorer in Tests Graham Gooch, who scored 8,900 runs in 118 Tests for England. Cook guided England to a series victory against Sri Lanka after winning the second Test at Durham by 9-wickets. The first Test was a one-sided affair by England having clinched the match by an innings and 88 runs against Sri Lanka. England will now head to Lord’s, to play the third Test starting on June 9. Former and current cricketers flocked social media site Twitter sending out congratulatory messages to Cook on his impressive run with the bat in Test and going past Tendulkar.

Cook’s position as captain was called into question two years ago as England suffered a 5-0 Ashes whitewash in Australia and again during the 2014 home series defeat by Sri Lanka.
