Mumbai’s Jemimah Rodrigues’ efforts went in vain as Andhra clinched their maiden women’s cricket U-19 one-day league’s title at Guntur. Mumbai had reached the final defeating Rajasthan while Andhra had trumped Jharkhand in the qualifiers. Opting to bat, Andhra’s E Padmaja starred with a 93-ball 73, helping set a target of 193 for Mumbai. Jemimah shone with the ball, finishing with 3 for 51. Janhvi Kate, Fatima Jaffer and Vrushali Bhagat shared 6 wickets between them.
Andhra openers were off to a decent start adding 32 runs on board. However, the innings fizzled after the 40th over. Jemimah scalped her first big wicket, of Padmaja. Janhvi and Vrushali pegged away at the middle-order. Jemimah returned and wiped off the tail-end within 49.5 overs.
Mumbai started shakily. Only five Mumbai batters managed to reach double-digit scores. Mumbai had expected Jemimah to score big: she had scored 5 centuries (including a double) in this tournament (she was the second Indian woman to achieve this feat at U-19 stage, after Smriti Mandhana). Unfortunately, she fell for 26. Sayali Satghare’s unbeaten 57-ball 42 was the only saving grace for Mumbai.
A combined effort from M Bhavana, Padmaja and A Sireesha combined helped Andhra roll Mumbai out for 145 in 43.4 overs.
