Andrew Fekete, the fast bowler from Tasmania, has thanked fans and people having wished him and having left messages for him through the day, on his selection to Australia’s touring squad to Bangladesh. His inclusion was deemed a surprise as he was takes from relative obscurity, but that doesn’t take away his credentials as one of the leading fast bowlers in the country: he was the second-highest wicket-taker in the last year’s Sheffield Shield, Australia’s domestic First-Class tournament. After a number of Australians phased away with the culmination of the Ashes last month, the selection committee chose to include new faces in Fekete and batsman Cameron Bancroft, and made Adam Voges the vice-captain for the upcoming tour. Australia’s fast bowling department in Bangladesh will be without Ryan Harris, who announced his retirement in unavoidable circumstances of a knee problem before the first Ashes Test, and Mitchell Johnson and Josh Hazlewood, who are rested keeping in mind their workload.
The surprise of Fekete is outlined by the statement of Australia’s new Test and One-Day International (ODI) captain Steven Smith. “I heard he bowled extremely well in India for the ‘A’ stuff there and there’s no doubt that the conditions are likely to be quite similar. I think he reverses the ball quite well and hopefully that will be one of our strengths that we’ll be able to do well in Bangladesh and he certainly provides that option,” he was quoted as saying by Sydney Morning Herald.
