Former England captain Andrew Strauss was on Monday awarded honorary life membership of the MCC, the prestigious English institution responsible for safeguarding the game’s rules.

Strauss, 35, guided England to consecutive Ashes victories over Australia in 2009 and 2011 before announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket in August last year.

He is the 27th former England skipper to become an honorary life member of the MCC and joins a select group of current and former players, umpires, administrators and journalists.

“Thank you so much to all at MCC for the offer of honorary life membership,” he said. “It is, of caourse, a great honour to receive this invitation and I clearly have no hesitation in accepting.”

MCC president Mike Griffith said: “Andrew Strauss has had a remarkable cricketing career and made an outstanding contribution to the game.
