Former Middlesex and England captain Andrew Strauss has joined the county’s executive board with immediate effect, the Lord’s-based club announced on Monday.

The 37-year-old, who retired from all cricket in 2012, was one of England’s most successful recent captains, leading the team to Ashes success at home in 2009 and in Australia in 2010/11.

Strauss replaces Paul Downton, the former Middlesex and England wicket-keeper who resigned from the board following his appointment as the managing director of England Cricket.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Andrew has accepted our invitation to join the Middlesex executive board,” Middlesex chairman Ian Lovett said on Monday.

“He is a Middlesex man through and through, with an outstanding reputation within the game.
