Sri Lanka lost their eighth wicket when skipper Angelo Mathews fell four runs short of a half-century, being dismissed for a score of 46 off 52 balls after getting caught by Daniel Vettori off the bowling of Tim Southee. Sri Lanka were reeling at a score of 216 for eight after 41.2 overs, needing 116 to win from 52 balls in order to overcome the 332-run target. Sri Lanka got off to a strong start, strolling to a score of 124 for the loss of one wicket with Lahiru Thirimanne posting his half-century before getting his off-stump knocked out to be dismissed on a score of 65 off 60 deliveries. His wicket triggered a collapse as Sri Lanka began to lose wickets in a heap, with veteran batsmen Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene departing on scores of 39 and a duck respectively. New Zealand earlier finished on a total of 331 for the loss of six wickets, with Corey Anderson propelling the New Zealand innings with a quickfire knock of 75 off 46 deliveries, that contained eight fours and two sixes. Skipper Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson too chipped in with valuable half-centuries, scoring 65 and 57 respectively.
