Days after being removed from the limited-overs captaincy of Sri Lanka, allrounder Angelo Mathews has been dropped for the home ODI series against England starting October 10.

The 15-member squad is led by a returning Dinesh Chandimal, who had missed the Asia Cup 2018 due to an injury. Other notable exclusion is top-order batsman Kusal Mendis who had two ducks in Sri Lanka’s two matches in the Asia Cup,

Experienced pacer Suranga Lakmal, who played just one game in the Asia Cup has also been omitted for the ODI squad with Nuwan Pradeep earning a recall. Wicketkeeper batsman Sadeera Samarawickrama, who last played an  ODI for Sri Lanka in 2017 against India also earns a recall with wrist spinner Lakshan Sandakan, not selected for Asia, also in the mix.

Mathews, 31, has scored 315 runs in eight ODIs this year, at an average of 52.50 and strike rate of just over 75 with two fifties, and over the past two years averages 59.20 in the format.

According to reports in the Sri Lankan media, Mathews met with Sri Lanka’s head coach Chandika Hathurasingha at SLC’s high performance centre, where he was told that the selectors had concerns over his fitness and would not pick him for the home series versus England starting October 10.

However, Mathews has been included in the 16-member squad for the Test series starting November 6. Opener Dhanushka Gunathilaka misses out after flying back home from the Asia cup with a back injury.
