As cricketer Virender Sehwag bludgeoned the West Indies for 219 in the fourth ODI, anti-corruption crusader and cricket fan Anna Hazare congratulated him on his feat. Cricket crazy Mumbaikars let out a heartening scream of joy as Sehwag crossed 200.
“I congratulate Sehwag for crossing a double century. He inspires the nation,” Hazare said.
“It was heart-warming to see Sehwag playing today. The past few matches have been slightly disappointing with almost all the top order batsmen failing to put up a consistent performance. However, today was all about vintage Sehwag – pure aggression and timing coupled with a cheeky smile. I hope he continues his form into the upcoming Australian tour – will be waiting,” said Abhinava S.N., an instructional designer.
Sehwag’s 149-ball carnage was laced with 25 fours and seven sixes.
Sehwag got a life when he was on 171 with West Indies captain Darren Sammy dropping a sitter. He was finally dismissed by Kieron Pollard, caught by substitute Anthony Martin at long on.
“Sammy will be thinking and cursing himself in the dressing room why did that ball bounce out of his hand when Viru was on 171. A classic knock by him crossing a landmark set by the little master (Tendulkar). It was always said if anyone can surpass this 200 run mark, it would be only Sehwag. Bravo Seh-wack,” said an excited Khantil Shah, a public relations professional.
Sehwag’s top score before this innings was 175 against Bangladesh in the World Cup opener earlier this year.
Ecstatic fans also flooded networking sites with messages congratulating Sehwag and sent out several SMSes to their friends, relatives and colleagues soon after his feat.
“Serene, sublime, subtle, sweet, shaandaar, SEHWAG,” screamed Anand Subramanium, a television producer. “Wonder how Sachin will react when he lands in Australia and realises his record has been broken,” he added. (IANS)
