After a well-deserved sabbatical following India’s success in the T20 World Cup, Jasprit Bumrah is set to return for the three-Test series against New Zealand beginning on October 16. However, the speed spearhead may choose to sit out the two Tests against Bangladesh in September.
There is a possibility that a left-arm seam and swing bowler may be added to the group of pacers competing for a Test cap because it is known that the Indian team management and selectors are trying to add more variety to that assault.
Two options are available to the selectors in terms of exposure and experience: the highly regarded but injury-prone Khaleel Ahmed and regular T20 player Arshdeep Singh.
“In case of Bumrah, he knows his body the best and it will be up to him if he wants to play in the Tests against Bangladesh. The team management and selectors are very clear that India needs a 120 per cent fit Jasprit Bumrah for all five Tests against Australia Down Under. Before that, there is New Zealand in India, where he will probably play and get ready for the sterner tests,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Regarding Arshdeep, it was really Rahul Dravid’s intention for him to play red ball cricket as well, which is why he was sent to Kent last year to participate in some county matches.
Despite being a much better bowler, Khaleel may be unpredictable at times. Yash Dayal is another option for a left-arm seamer, but he is currently trailing Khaleel and Arshdeep in this competition.
It is reported that Salil Ankola’s mandate has finally finished, and he has been informed that the selection meeting for the tour of Sri Lanka was his last. Ajay Ratra is expected to take over as North Zone national selector.
Ajay Ratra, a former wicketkeeper for India who once amassed a Test century in the West Indies, is the favorite to occupy the fifth position, which is often occupied by a North Zone contender.
After former chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma was fired for his careless remarks during a private channel sting, the post became vacant.
CAC has conducted interviews with Ratra, Ajay Mehra, Shakti Singh, and RS Sodhi for the position.
Ratra, 42, who is also in the NCA’s pool of coaches, is presently serving as an Indian support staff member in Australia. a limited-overs touring women’s squad.
Ratra’s appointment is anticipated to be formal once he returns.
