Australian cricket legend Richie Benaud‘s fellow Nine commentary team member Mark Taylor has said plans for him to return for the Melbourne and Sydney Tests were in significant doubt because of a slow recovery from injuries the 83-year-old suffered in a car accident in late October.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Taylor said that Benaud was okay but still in a bit of pain, which was a bit of worry. He added that Benaud had cracked his sternum and something in his shoulder, making him struggle a bit. Taylor was, however, able to offer consolation that another commentary veteran, Bill Lawry, would be back on air for the Boxing Day Test, the report added.
