Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has supported India’s move to delay Mohammed Shami’s international return after a prolonged injury lay-off, stating that the veteran pacer will make “right decision at the right time“.
Shami had proven his fitness in practice sessions and domestic cricket for Bengal, but did not get taken in India’s playing XI for the 1st T20I against England. A lot of fans and supporters were willing for Shami to make a return, but Suryakumar went with three spinners, a decision which went North as they bowled out England for just 132. India had beat England by 7 wickets to spare.
“When you’ve been such a seasoned campaigner and are among India’s top 10 bowlers, you understand your body’s limits well,” said Irfan at a promotional event.
“Shami always provides honest feedback to the team management, and decisions are made through mutual communication. Recovery at the highest level takes time, especially after playing consistently. I believe he and the team management will make the right call at the right time,” he added.
As he had gone surgery and rehab after an ankle injury in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Shami made an impressive return in domestic cricket, as he represented Bengal in all the three formats.
