Cricket Australia may appoint separate coaches for the Test and one-day teams as they look to climb back to the top of the rankings in both Tests and ODIs, Fox Sports cricket commentator Brendon Julian said.

Julian tips Steve Rixon and Mickey Arthur for the post. Rixon, the former Australia wicketkeeper, has coached New Zealand and, recently, was appointed as Australia’s fielding coach; Arthur, presently is coaching Western Australia and was in charge of South Africa previously.

Australia are the only Test cricket team never to have had an overseas and Arthur would make history if he were to be appointed.

“I’ve been a big fan of having one coach for Test matches and a separate coach for Twenty20s and one-dayers,” Julian said on Fox Sports News

“I think that’s probably going to happen.”

“We may go for a Steve Rixon or someone here in Australia, but it’s time we moved on and we’re … looking on a global scope.

“One of the issues, there’s not a lot of people available to suddenly step into (the role).”

“What you want is a coach to start in the next three-four months, and I don’t think there’s a lot of people (available) out there.”

Given the potential lack of available candidates within cricket, Julian said: “I don’t necessarily think you need an ex-Test cricketer, I don’t think you need an Australian cricketer, to be the next coach.”

“It could be a guy they want to put in at a certain level that can liaise with a lot of other coaches and pull it all together.

“This could be a person that has a very good sporting background who has coached international teams, that can have a understanding of professional sport at a certain level, that can bring in ex Test cricketers that can help batting and bowling.”
