Debutanats are always under pressure but yet there are few who make an impact in their first game and evolve as champions. Bangladeshi off-spinner Mehedi Hasan hogged all the headlines by scalping a fifer on Test debut against England in the ongoing Test. He finished with six wickets to his name and did a brillant job with the red cherry in hand. The young prodigy made it to the side after playing a mere 12 First-Class games. He has certainly made a name for himself by chipping wickets against a formidable side like England. Every young bowler has some kin of inspiration in his life and Mehedi also has one and surprisingly it’s an Indian cricketer. Mehedi revealed that he learnt bowling off-spin after watching former Indian off-spinner Ramesh Powar bowling on TV. FULL Cricket Scorecard: Bangladesh vs England 1st Test at Chittagong
The talented off-spinner was quoted in a report from The Daily Observer saying, “Though I have never met him, Ramesh Power is my hero. I used to watch him play IPL matches on TV and took inspiration from him. It was because the captain (Mushfiqur Rahim) had faith in me. I was also encouraged by the senior members of the team and special thanks to Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan for their kind words. No, unfortunately my parents have not watched my heroic debut. My father was a truck driver till last year and he with my mother stay at home Khulna, which is over 350 km from here (Chittagong).”
Powar also spoke about Mehedi and hope to meet him soon, he said, “I have just watched him (Mehedi Hasan) getting out in the slip. He looks a classical off-spinner. I feel very nice to say getting inspiration from my bowling.I heard he was also a captain of the Under-19 team. I have never met him but the world is now a small place and wish to meet him on any day. I will tell him to involve with modern cricket and learn new tricks with ball.”
