Kumar Dharmasena will be officiating the second Test between Bangladesh and England which is scheduled from October 28th to November 1 and is going to be played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka. Dharmasena had tough times during the first Test as he had his decision referred to the third umpire16 times out of which 8 were reversed. It all started from the Day Two of the first Test when Moeen Ali was given out by Dharmasena on three consecutive deliveries off Shakib-al-Hasan’s bowling in the first innings of the first Test match. Since then all his decisions related to lbw were reviewed by both teams. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD: Bangladesh vs England, 2nd Test at Dhaka
Keeping in consideration of the happenings in the first Test, there was a sense of uncertainty if Dharmasena will stand as the on-field umpire for the second and the final Test of the series, but a spokesman for the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed Dharmasena will stand in Dhaka this week as planned previously. The first Test saw the match referee logging record number of 115 appeals of which 26 were reviewed by both teams. Out of this 26, 18 belonged against Dharmasena and the rest against his partner New Zealander Chris Gaffaney who saw only three of his decisions being reversed by the referral system. Gaffaney has been appointed as the third umpire for the second Test, while Dharmasena will once again stand out on-field along with India S Ravi, who was in charge of DRS in Chittagong. It is been said that the umpires gave away these many wrong decisions due to the turning pitch. The pitch had started assisting spinners since the very first day of the match and it carried on till the last day. What has been observed is that umpires have recently given a a lot of wrong decisions recently since the time the Decision Referral System (DRS) has been brought into use. The umpires tend to give batsmen out if the ball strikes their pads while facing the spinner. This lead the Dharmasena’s decision being reversed in the replay’s as the technology would show the ball spinning away to either side of the wicket after pitching.
