The Day One of the Test completely belonged to the hosts, as they ended the day with their score reading 321 for 4. Kusal Mendis 166* remained the highlights of the day. The Lankan No. 3 smashed his second Test ton to guide his team to a comfortable total. He was well supported by Asela Gunaratne (85), as the two added 196 runs for the fourth wicket. Gunaratne, who has enjoyed a brilliant run of late, replaced the injured skipper Angelo Mathews in the squad. He came out to bat when the score read 3 for 92, and along with Mendis, added 196 runs to bail his team out. Though he missed his hundred, Mendis remained unbeaten on 166, just 10 short of his highest Test total.
Nothing went Bangladesh way, including the toss, as the Sri Lankans opted to bat first after winning it. Though they lost a couple of wickets early, Mendis and Gunaratne scripted a fantastic recovery. For the visitors, all the frontline bowlers got a wicket each, while all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan remained wicketless. Bangladesh will hope for a comeback on Day Two, and if they failed to do so, their hopes of winning maiden Test against Sri Lanka will remain a distant dream. The two teams have so far played 16 Tests, and Bangladesh have lost 14 of them while two have ended as draws.
