Starring for hosts Bangladesh on day one of the first Test against West Indies in Chittagong was Mominul Haque who made 120 to draw level with India captain Virat Kohli as the only batsmen this year to have managed four Test centuries.

Mominul’s 120 was the only score in excess of 44 as the hosts were stunned by a fiery spell from Shannon Gabriel between lunch and tea, and at one time had them looking at a huge target. Mominul began 2018 with 176 and 105 in the same Test against Sri Lanka at the same venue, followed by a lean phase in which he had scores of 0, 33, 1, 0, 0, 15, 11 and 9. Mominul then made 161 and 1 as Zimbabwe were beaten earlier this month, and now has 120.

SCORECARD: Bangladesh vs West Indies, 1st Test, Chittagong

Speaking to reporters after stumps on Thursday, the 27-year-old dismissed any comparison with Kohli who is ranked No 1 in Test cricket and has 1063 runs in the format this year.

“Talking of Tamim [Iqbal] bhai, there is no question of comparing me with him,” he said. “He is on another level in world cricket. I don’t think it’s right to compare with him, and Virat Kohli is even higher. I don’t think about these things. The year is not over yet, there are Tests left, the second innings and the second Test. So instead of thinking about that, I think about how to improve and contribute to the team as much as I can.”

Mominul was Gabriel’s first wicket in a spell in which he triggered a Bangladesh collapse from 222/3 to 235/7. The hosts ended day one on 315/8 after the tail wagged.

“Regrets are always there. In the previous Test I got out for 160, and if you don’t have regret or the hunger to perform better, you will stall – the player will have less chance of doing well. Whether you are out for 0 or 100, if you are out there is always regret,” said Mominul.
