India former legend Rahul Dravid and well-known for being “The Wall” for more than a decade was approached by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that includes legends Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. He has worked wonders for former Indian Premier League (IPL) team Rajasthan Royals as their mentor leading them to finals and recently for India’s U-19 team too in ICC U-19 World Cup 2016. He has played the role of pillar for Indian batting order for 16 years, and for the cool and calm customer he is both on and off the pitch he was approached for India’s chief coach. As reported on cricbuzz, Mr. Dependable was asked if he had any other commitments in the future and he will give it a thought. He is the most successful overseas batsman and a test cricket specialist, ideal to guide a young side and form a foundation for the future of Indian Cricket. If the sources are to believed if Dravid agrees to take on the opportunity, he will be given a long-term contract extending to 2019 World Cup and further. There is a meeting of advisory committee to be held on April 5 regarding this issue as Ravi Shastri’s contract with the team as a Director has ended and it is less likely that he would be considered for the role of Head Coach. Dravid was recently appointed as mentor for IPL team Delhi Daredevils after his stint with Indian U-19 team. Although, the clouds haven’t yet cleared on the issue as players were not interested to comment on the ongoing process. Before Dravid, Michael Hussey was approached for the job but it was not all well at the end.
BCCI seem desperate as Dravid is a perfectionist for grooming young players and teaching them the importance of temperament which was clearly visible with his stint for both Rajasthan Royals and Indian U-19 team. Though, the talks over him becoming the chief coach for India are in the pipe, Sanjay Bangar, Bharat Arun and R Sridhar continue to provide their services in the meantime.
