The Indian cricket team currently is without a head coach, as Rahul Dravid’s tenure ended along with the end of T20 World Cup 2024. A second Indian team has travelled to Zimbabwe for a 5-match T20I series, but with the head of National Cricket Academy (NCA), VVS Laxman, filling in as the head coach for a temporary time. BCCI has already interviewed two people for the role- them being Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman- with the former being expected to take on the role.
1But there have been some delay in the announcement. BCCI secretary Jay Shah has already confirmed that the new head coach will be in charge from the Sri Lanka series onwards. According to a report, the delay in the official announcement is due to the ongoing negotiation in salary between Gambhir and BCCI.
Along with Dravid, the coaching period of his staff, i.e. batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach T Dilip has also ended. As soon as Gambhir’s appointment is declared officially, the board will need to start working on the process to hire other coaches too.
It has also been reported that the board plans to give Gambhir a free choice as far as for the selection of support staff. A batting coach might not even be needed as Gambhir, during his playing days, was a top-level batter himself.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah had earlier said: “Both coach and selector appointments will be made shortly after. CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names after reaching Mumbai. Whatever they have decided we will go by that. VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe but new coach will join from Sri Lanka series.”
The Indian team’s schedule to tour to Sri Lanka for their three T20I and and three ODIs starts on July 27.
