In a great change of policy, the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises are now been given the permission to sign replacement players for the remaining season, which is going to continue on May 17 with the match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
However, a lot of teams are going to continue in the tournament without the facilities of a lot of foreign players as they had returned home when the league was suspended for a week because of rising tensions at the border between India and Pakistan.
Several teams are tensed over the availability of their overseas players, especially for the playoffs.
Permission to sign replacements
A report by ESPNCricinfo has revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given permission all the teams to sign the replacement players till the tournament goes on. In the usual case, team is only given the permission to sign a replacement until 12th match of the season, but that is not going to be the case this time.
Massive change in replacement rule
The BCCI has introduced a massive change in the replacement rule. Any player who will be signed now for this year is only going to be allowed to play for their franchises in this campaign, and will not be able to get retained till the 2026 season.
Apart from that, all the players who were in the IPL before the tournament was suspended are still going to be available to be retained for the next season.
“Given the non-availability of certain foreign players due to national commitments or personal reasons or any injury or illness, Temporary Replacement Players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament. This decision is subject to the condition that the Temporary Replacement players taken from this point forward will not be eligible for retention in the following year. Temporary Replacement players will have to register for the IPL Player Auction 2026,” IPL said in an email to franchises as reported by EspnCricinfo.

This change in the rule has come to being applied in order to make sure that even though all the franchises can sign oversea players in order to replace their missing oversea players, they should not use it in order to sign the players for the next season at a cheap price.
