Vineet Kulkarni reportedly might lose his position from the International Cricket Council (ICC) panel of umpires. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to withdrew Kulkarni’s name from the panel and most likely it is Anil Chaudhary who is going to be BCCI’s candidate for the ICC panel of umpires for the upcoming season. This decision was taken following BCCI’s annual review of umpires, an exercise which was undertaken after a two-year hiatus. Kulkarni’s blunders during India’s home series against South Africa became one of the major reasons behind this decision of the BCCI. According to Times of India, a BCCI official who didn’t wanted to be named, said, “There were too many complaints (against Kulkarni). In the last international series in India, he made glaring mistakes. With the Indian team management feeling he wasn’t doing a good job, BCCI is most likely to withdraw his name from the ICC panel.”
Kulkarni was at fault even during Mumbai’s semi-final in Ranji Trophy last year and that saw BCCI removing him from the final, which was eventually won by Karnataka for a second consecutive time. BCCI sources also said the complaints were the reason Kulkarni had not been slotted to officiate in the Ranji final between Saurashtra and Mumbai.
The umpire’s blunders in 2015 when India played South Africa turned out to affect results of certain matches. JP Duminy looked plumb LBW off a Yorker from Bhuveneshwar Kumar survived because of Kulkarni’s wrong decision. He eventually led the chase in that ODI. Later in the Test series, Shikhar Dhawan was given out when the replays clearly showed the ball headed down the leg side. The end of that series saw the Indian team filing an official complaint against Kulkarni.
