The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) was entrusted the mantle to chose India’s next head coach after Anil Kumble’s resignation.  The CAC consists 3-memeber panel — Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly, who had appointed Kumble, on Tuesday late evening chose Ravi Shastri as India’s head coach. Along with Shastri, Zaheer Khan was appointed as bowling coach, while Rahul Dravid will be the team’s batting consultant for overseas Test tours. According to reports, the Board of control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is quite miffed with the CAC as they failed to reach a clear consensus till the wee-hours of Tuesday to announce Shastri’s appointment. It took a press-conference from BCCI Secretary Amitabh Chaudhary in the evening to deny speculations of Shastri being appointed as coach (a news that was later found true). Few senior administrators in the BCCI felt that the CAC could have handled the whole episode in much simpler manner and not make it look like a last-minute appointment.

“With the Lodha Committee reforms clearing suggesting that the players should be empowered to run the game, Monday’s lack of clarity on the coach issue was a classic case on how the board officials are still best equipped to handle administrative issues,” a senior administrator told ToI.

BCCI officials earlier had suggested that the CAC take Virat Kohli’s opinion over a video-call as opposed to meeting him in person to get his views.
