Tasmania batsman Ben McDermott has been added to Australia squad for the remaining two matches of their three-match ODI series against South Africa. McDermott has been called up as a cover for Shaun Marsh who missed out the series opener in Perth on Sunday for a minor surgery.

McDermott could make his ODI debut should Marsh fail to prove his fitness for the second ODI to be played on Friday.

“The National Selection Panel has decided to add Ben McDermott to the ODI squad ahead of Friday’s match against South Africa at the Adelaide Oval,” Australia’s chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said.

He added, “Part of the decision to include Ben is to ensure we have appropriate coverage should Shaun Marsh fail to recover in time for Friday’s second ODI. We will continue to monitor Shaun’s progress and give him every opportunity to prove his fitness ahead of the match.”

McDermott made his international debut last month and played in all four T20Is against UAE and Pakistan. He was unlucky to have been run-out in his all three matches against Pakistan though.

The 23-year-old Tasmanian was the second-highest run-getter in Australia’s domestic one-day tournament where he finished with 427 runs at an average of 71.16 in seven matches including two centuries and two half-centuries.

Marsh was had to undergo a surgery to remove an abscess from his buttock ruling him out of the first ODI which Australia went on to lose by six wickets.
