English participation in the 2018-19 Big Bash has increased with news that England‘s Test captain Joe Root and vice-captain Jos Buttler will play for Sydney Thunder.

The star pair will feature in the T20 league’s first half – seven games in all – during the window between England’s tours to Sri Lanka and the West Indies.

Buttler, 27 has previously played six games for Sydney Thunder in 2017-18 and before that for Melbourne Renegades. The cavalier batsman brings to the franchise the experience of 232 career T20 matches from which he has 5099 runs at a strike-rate of 144.65. In the last Big Bash, he scored 202 runs in six innings.

His Test skipper Root has featured in just 12 T20 games since the final of the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 at Eden Gardens – eight for England and four for Yorkshire. He did not find any takers at January’s IPL player auction, where Buttler was purchased by Rajasthan Royals.

The 2018-19 Big Bash runs from December 18 to 17 February.
