A working day started off on a bizarre but special note for office-goer Michael Whitaker when he found a man sleeping at the back of his car at West Bridgford area of Nottingham. Brendan Taylor, the former Zimbabwe captain and wicketkeeper who only gave up his international career for his country only this year to devote himself to county cricket, had found his way to this vehicle, a Chevrolet Matiz, after being hungover with celebrations on his county team’s win. The rain and his inability to find his way back home had him seeking refuge in an unknown car, unlocked on this ‘one rare occasion’. In a report in the Nottingham Post, Whitaker spoke about the surprise that was awaiting him. READ: Guy Whittall wakes up with 8-foot crocodile under his bed!
When he went to open the door of his car to go to work, he ‘had to do a double-take’. “I did not know what to do. Someone I didn’t know had fallen asleep in our car.” He called the police, and “An officer tried to wake him up and when he came round, he was dazed.
“Neither myself, the police or Brendan knew what to do. I don’t think he knew where he was but he was very apologetic and it quickly became clear that it was very innocent. Realising who it was made it even funnier because how often do you find an international cricket star asleep in your car?” READ: Brendan Taylor, thank you for the memories!
The police said no offence had been committed and that Taylor was gracious enough to offer to get the car valeted.
Whitaker found it funny. “It was one of the best excuses to be late for work ever.”
“It was the most bizarre situation I think I have ever been in.”
Taylor was part of the Nottinghamshire team that defeated Durham in the quarter-final at Trent Bridge and booked their place in the semi-final, in the Royal London One-Day Cup. The win was a special moment to celebrate, something Taylor seemed to have done nicely.
