Brendon McCullum is all set to return for the third and final One-Day International (ODI) against Pakistan at Auckland having recovered from a back injury that sidelined him for a few weeks. However, he may miss out on company of his usual opening partner in Martin Guptill as the latter is suffering from a twisted ankle and his availability for the game stands at 50-50 as per coach Mike Hesson’s understanding. McCullum may open with Tom Latham in his absence. Alternatively, Kane Williamson may continue to fill in the opener’s spot. FULL SCORECARD: Pakistan vs New Zealand 2015-16, 3rd ODI at Auckland
Hesson said Guptill’s progress will be assessed through course of the day but New Zealand will not risk him if he’s not fully fit as there is an important home ODI series against Australia coming up. “He’s got ice on his ankle, so it’s a twisted ankle. We won’t know a lot more til tomorrow morning. But he’s probably 50/50 at this stage,” Hesson was quoted as saying by radiosport.co.nz. Hesson added that New Zealand had a back up opener in Latham and there is the possibility that McCullum will open with him. “We’ve got Tom Latham with us. Brendon seemed to get through training OK today. Thankfully, we’ve got that cover with us.”
Meanwhile, New Zealand have also named a 13-man squad for the upcoming Chappell-Hadlee series against the Australians at home which is looked upon as a marquee series by both countries. McCullum will lead the Black Caps in that affair which will be his farewell series in the 50-over game.
