Ricky Ponting and Aaron Finch were hoping for Glenn Maxwell to be included in the ODI squad as replacement for injured Chris Lynn. However, Australia made a surprise pick on Thursday morning by calling Cameron White as the replacement. White last played an ODI in 2015 against England in a tri-series before the World Cup where he was dismissed for nought. Prior to that, he played in 2011. White has, however, been in top form in BBL for Melbourne Renegades with 285 runs at 142.5 and has scored the runs at a strike rate of 115.85.

Maxwell, too, scored fifties in his last two innings of BBL. He also notched up two double-centuries for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield matches being the top-scorer in the tournament. However, in the limited-overs cricket, White dominated for Victoria in 2016-17 season, topping the run-charts with 457 runs at 76.16, including two hundreds and two fifties. He also scored 199 runs at almost 50 in the List A tournament this season.

Australian selection panel member Trevor Hohns cited reasons behind recalling White in the ODI set-up to cricket.com.au, “Cameron’s in very good form, as his figures demonstrate. He’s playing very well. He’s one of the leading run-scorers in this season’s BBL, he’s experienced, he’s a very smart cricketer and he’s a good fielder. He ticks all the boxes for what we need at this stage.”

Earlier, Chris Lynn was part of the squad and Maxwell was dropped. Steven Smith had already mentioned during the 2017-18 Ashes the reason behind overlooking Maxwell. Smith said, “Maxwell needs to train in a smart way.” Steve Waugh was the first to attack on Smith’s comment saying the Australian captain could have spoken to Maxwell in person about his training.

Maxwell, however, took it in good spirit. He mentioned about meeting Smith personally and clearing the air about the ‘smart training’ comment.

The first ODI will be held at MCG in Melbourne on January 14.
