Canada plunged further after big-hitting Rizwan Cheema fell cheaply to Jacob Oram for 2 in their World Cup Group A match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The Canadian innings looked in good shape when captain Ashish Bagai and Jimmy Hansra were at the wicket, forging a solid 125-run stand for the third wicket but the exit of Bagai for a well compiled 84 triggered a slide.
Bagai fell to spinner Nathan McCullum sixteen short of what would have been a well deserved century. He gave himself room to essay a forceful shot but got a faint nick and was caught by brother Brendon behind the wicket. Bagai raised a significant 125-run third wicket stand with Jimmy Hansra as Canada batted like an established team.
It was the same Bagai-Hansra pair, who forged a match-winning century stand against Kenya at Delhi.
If Bagai’s dismissal was not enough, Canada suffered a further setback when well-set Jimmy Hansra retired hurt because of cramps after scoring a half-century.
Earlier, Kyle Mills pushed Canada on the backfoot with two early wickets. Mills struck the first blow removing Ruvindu Gunasekera in the third over before accounting for Zubin Surkari in the fifth over. He limped off the field after bowling four balls of that wicket-taking over and his over was completed by Jesse Ryder.
Hiral Patel, who took the attack to the New Zealand bowlers with a cameo knock of 31, studded with five fours and one six. The highlight of Patel’s knock was the three consecutive fours he smacked off Tim Southee in the eight over.
Brief Scores: New Zealand 358 for 6 in 50 overs (Brendon McCullum 101, Ross Taylor 78, Jesse Ryder 38, Scott Styris 35, Kane Williamson 34*; Harvir Baidwan 3 for 82, Balaji Rao 2 for 62, John Davison 1 for 30) vs Canada 179 for 5 in 38 overs (Ashish Bagai 84, Jimmy Hansra 52 retired hurt, Hiral Patel 31; Kyle Mills 2 for 2).
